BH4BP #11 – Chocolate and Eating On a Budget

This week, I start the show discussing chocolate and why it is so irresistible. Then, I go over the different varieties of chocolate and their makeups. I tell you which chocolate is best to consume and why.  Some references that I used were Mayo Clinic and Wikipedia.

I end the show by addressing a question by Dawn on how to eat healthier more cheaply. I go over 10 tips on how you can eat healthy on a budget. If you want to learn more ways to save money, please check out my personal finance podcast Millionaire or Bust.

    Great podcast!
    I’m LEARNING to LIKE dark chocolate. I’m a milk chocolate gal all the way, but I do understand the good properties of dark, so I’m trying!
    When I’m tight on money, I shop around the perimeter of the grocery store. I have save money that way. I, also, have an allowance for food and if I have some money left over, it goes towards the following week’s budget. The good thing about being on a budget that it does limit bread consumption (my weakness). Farmers Markets are great. Traders Joes, also, has some great deals, too, (if you have one around you, please check it out). Thanks Talli for doing a podcast on this topic, so important.

    We were in Chicago this week and bought dark chocolate Frango mints. Do those count? Hope you’re enjoying some chocolate right now…see you in Twitter-land!

    Yes, the chocolate that you had does count because it is dark chocolate and it has many health benefits. Probably, not much health benefits from the other ingredients, although they don’t sound so bad. Glad you are having a good time in Chicago!

    Nice podcast on chocolate. I would be interested in knowing which brands are the best, where available, and what percentage of dark chocolate is ideal – 50, 70, 85% etc. Keep up the good work.

    @Karen Rasmussen Great questions! Obviously the higher the percentage of cacao the more antioxidants you will receive. Research shows that great benefits occur at 75% and up. So, 75% or higher would be ideal. However, not many can tolerate such high levels. It is important to work your way up to that level.

    Some brands which produce high quality dark chocolate at those levels are Endangered Species Chocolate, Scharffen Berger, Lindt Excellence and Chocolove. Some of these you can buy at your local supermarket. If you can’t find it there you can always buy it via the internet.
