BH4BP #30 – Beef or Mock Meat: What’s for Dinner?

I know it seems like everywhere you go, people are telling you the healthiest thing you can do is to go vegetarian. I also know that many of you enjoy a nice, juicy steak or hamburger once in a while and don’t plan to give it up anytime soon. Others are vegetarians or vegans who often enjoy a tasty meatless substitute, such as meatless chicken, meatless beef or meatless turkey. However, whether you choose to eat meat or meat substitutes, not all options are created equal. Just because it doesn’t have meat in it, doesn’t mean that it is healthy.

In this show, I am going to delve into the world of beef, for you meat lovers, and the meatless meat world, for you veggie lovers. I am going to discuss what is healthy and what is not so healthy to consume.

Some references I used while researching this show are The New Wellness Encyclopedia, about.com and Mayo Clinic.

If you like the show, please head on over to iTunes and give me a nice review.  It’s a great way to give me some good exposure and can help me get more listeners.  Thanks for listening, everyone!

  1. Shawno says:

I cooked a skillet dish (think it was tacos) recently with some lean ground beef (like 93/7, I think) and it was pretty good. I was surprised when I went to drain the fat and there wasn’t hardly any at all.

  2. Talli van Sunder says:

Shawno, yes it is surprising how much difference it makes to go with lean ground beef.

  3. Mark says:

I am all about the meat (lean of course) I have to have my protein!

  4. I think beef is fine– the problem is more the hormones and antibiotics added to supermarket beef. If you get antibiotic-free and hormone-free neat, it will be healthy. I buy local beef and usually split a steer every year with neighbors, since I have a big freezer.

I was a vegetarian for nearly 25 years and decided to eat meat again because we are designed to be omnivores.

    Dear Talli:
I enjoyed your show as usual. We always buy meat that it is lean. The only one that is more expensive is the very lean ground beef but it tastes So Much better! Thanks

  6. HR Meadors says:

Great show but I still think I’ll stick to mostly veggies. With only occasional forays into the world of red meats.
